A man is swallowed by a crocodile and thinks it a perfect opportunity to better mankind and win fame with his genius. A scathing satire of egotism and utopian thinking. Brilliantly absurd in its matter-of-fact tone and ridiculous, petty-yet-grandiose characters.
An early precursor of Kafka's Metamorphosis. Actually, in this satirical allegory, there is no metamorphosis - but a difficulty in digestion. It is a nice satire on the political, social, and economic conditions of Russia and Europe of the 1860s.
The Crocodile (Audible Audio Edition) Fyodor Dostoevsky Arthur Grey Galleon Audio Books
For those who associate Dostoyevsky only with long and tragic novels, this can introduce them to the lighter side of the world's greatest prose writer. He could be hilarious and satirical when he chose to be. Even his most serious works have their elements of humor. But this novella is a constant howl to those who recognize the allusions. Even if you don't, you'll crack up anyway at the absurdity and surrealism of the plot. This is a must for anyone who is an FD devotee.Definitely on a par with "The Friend of the Family" and "A Disgraceful Affair." Discover the lighter side of Fyodor. Yeah, wiseguys/gals I spelled "croc" wrong on purpose in the title.

The Crocodile (Audible Audio Edition) Fyodor Dostoevsky Arthur Grey Galleon Audio Books Reviews
A fan of Dostoevsky. This book is not mind grapping, in the way some of his other books are.
Could take it or leave it.
An interesting, fantastical read. I found it similar in a lot of ways to Nikolai Gogol's "The Nose" in terms of its nonsensical premise and general absurdity. If you're looking for a lighter read by Dostoevsky, this is definitely the way to go.
Short story for a Russian -- a novel for anyone else. Read this and Tolstoy's "How a Mushik Fed Two Officials" to understand academia and bureaucracies.
